The Arc'teryx Proton Hoody is a breathable synthetic insulation layer built for climbers and high-output mountain activities. Its 80gsm Coreloft™ Compact insulation works together with an air-permeable face fabric and liner to regulate temperature and manage vapour build-up during movement.

The Fortius™ Air 20 nylon shell is light and durable, articulated patterning removes restriction, and a helmet-compatible insulated hood extends the warmth. This updated version features a PFAS-free DWR treatment, a Fortius™ Air 20 face fabric with 42% recycled nylon, and Coreloft™ Compact insulation for improved stretch and breathability.

Frequently asked questions

Can the Proton Hoody be used for skiing in negative temperatures?

Yes, it can be used for skiing in negative temperatures, but it is best worn as a midlayer under an waterproof shell, especially in cold, windy or changing conditions. For spring skiing or milder days, it can be worn on its own. The warmth felt also depends on the intensity of the activity: during high-intensity skiing its breathability is an advantage, while during low-intensity or long static periods, a windproof and waterproof outer layer becomes essential to retain heat.

What are the measurements for size M and L?

Size M: Back length 77.1 cm, chest circumference 118.0 cm, hem circumference (relaxed) 110.0 cm. Size L: Back length 79.6 cm, chest circumference 125.6 cm, hem circumference (relaxed) 117.6 cm.

Does layering the Proton Hoody over an Atom or a shell add warmth?

Layering the Proton Hoody over an Atom or a shell will add some warmth, but not in the same way a true belay jacket would. The Proton is built as an air-permeable midlayer, so it is designed to release heat during movement rather than trap it. When placed over another insulated piece or over a shell, you get a small bump in warmth from the extra synthetic insulation, but it will not deliver the high level of heat retention you would expect from a purpose-built belay jacket.

Is the Proton Hoody suitable for running at -15°C with just a base layer?

The Proton Hoody provides breathable warmth for climbing and high-output mountain activities and features 80gsm Coreloft™ Compact insulation. However, Arc'teryx does not rate garments for temperature as there are too many factors that influence this result from person to person.
